“시민들은 자신의 데이터에 대한 통제력을 점점 더 잃어가고 있으며, 언제 어디서 어떤 정보가 자신에 대해 저장되는지도 더 이상 알 수 없다.” [1]
“역이나 백화점에서는 CCTV가 우리를 감시하고, 휴대폰을 통해 제3자가 우리의 위치를 파악할 수 있으며, 전화 기록은 반년 동안 저장된다. 인터넷에서의 행동 또한 세세히 추적 가능하다. 국가뿐 아니라 민간 기업들 역시 우리의 취향과 습관에 대해 점점 더 많이 알고 있으며, 그것은 종종 우리가 모르는 사이에 이루어진다.” [2]
이번 퍼포먼스 프로젝트 **〈시놉티콘: 감시사회〉**는 코로나 팬데믹 시기를 배경으로 한다.
우리는 (허내훈, 이은우) 인터넷과 텔레비전을 통해 실시간으로 모든 정보를 얻을 수 있지만, 동시에 그 매체들에 강하게 의존하게 되는 사회를 경험했다. 사회와 개인은 통제된 제약 속에서 서로를 의심하게 되었다.
우리는 공공장소에서의 마스크 착용 의무와 그 준수 여부의 감시를 주제로 한 **‘휴대폰 마스크’**를 제작했다.
허내훈은 이 마스크를 착용하고 사람들을 실시간으로 촬영했고, 이은우는 모니터 앞에 앉아 그 장면을 관찰했다.
모니터 속 관객의 얼굴에는 디지털 마스크가 나타난다.
이 프로젝트는 과거 〈히키코모리〉 작업에서 제기했던 문제의식을 확장한다.
기술 네트워크의 발달이 사회 구조 속에서 어떻게 전환 과정을 만들어내는지를 탐구하는 동시에, ‘히키코모리’와 같은 자발적 고립과 사회적 소외의 현상을 드러낸다. [3]

“Citizens have less and less control over their data and no longer know when, where, and what is being stored about them through data processing.” [1]
“At train stations and shopping malls, we are watched by surveillance cameras; through our mobile phones, third parties can find out where we are; our call records will soon be stored for half a year; and our online behavior can be traced in detail. The state, as well as private companies, know increasingly more about us—our preferences and habits—often without our awareness.” [2]
Our performance project Synopticon: Surveillance Society reflects on these conditions intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic.
We, Naehoon Huh and Eunu Lee, observed how information could be accessed instantly through the Internet and television, and how people became deeply dependent on these media. Society and individuals were subjected to restrictions, and mutual distrust grew under the mechanisms of control.
We created a “mobile phone mask”, addressing both the public mandate to wear masks and the control mechanisms enforcing it.
Naehoon Huh wore the mask and live-filmed people in real time, while Eunu Lee sat in front of a monitor observing the entire scene.
On the monitor, the viewer’s face appeared as a digital mask.
As in our earlier project Hikikomori, this work questions the transformation of social structures under the technological development of networks.
At the same time, it reveals the phenomenon of voluntary isolation and social alienation, much like the concept of “Hikikomori.” [3]

„Bürger haben immer weniger Kontrolle über ihre Daten und wissen nicht mehr, wann was wo über sie gespeichert wird durch Datenverarbeitung“. [1]
„Auf Bahnhöfen, in Kaufhäusern werden wir von Videokameras überwacht, über unsere Handys können Dritte herausfinden, wo wir uns aufhalten, unsere Telefonverbindungen werden bald ein halbes Jahr lang gespeichert, und wie wir uns im Internet verhalten, ist im Detail nachprüfbar. Der Staat, aber auch private Firmen wissen immer mehr über uns, unserer Vorlieben und Gewohnheiten. Und zwar oft, ohne dass wir es selbst wissen“. [2]
Unser neues Projekt mit der Performance ist Synoptikum: Überwachungsgesellschaft. Mit der Corona- Pandemie haben wir, Naehoon Huh und Eunu Lee, erlebt und gedacht, dass man alle Informationen durch das Internet oder den Fernseher der Echtzeitsituation bekommen kann und man von denen stark abhängt. Die Gesellschaft und Menschen wurden stark mit den Einschränkungen kontrolliert und man zweifelt miteinander.
Wir haben eine Handy-Maske geschafft, die das Gebot des öffentlichen Mundschutztragens und der Kontrolle über dessen Einhaltung zum Thema macht. Naehoon Huh hat diese Maske getragen und die Menschen Live gefilmt und Eunu Lee setzt sich auf dem Stuhl vor dem Monitor und er sieht diese alle Situation. Das Gesicht der Betrachter auf dem Monitor erscheint ein digitale Maske.
Wie wir früher schon eine Frage mit dem Projekt von Hikikomori gestellt haben, ist sie ursprünglich an Vorsorge mit der technologischen Entwicklung des Netzwerks und einen Umwandlungsprozess innerhalb einer sozialen Struktur. Auf der anderen Seite ermöglicht dieses Phänomen freiwilliger Isolation und soziale Entfremdung wie „Hikikomori“. [3]
